Jewelry Care

Sterling Silver Jewelry

To avoid excessive tarnish, store your sterling jewelry with anti-tarnish strips or wrapped in anti-tarnish tissue or anti-tarnish fabric. You can also use a jewelry box fitted with anti-tarnish lining.

To remove light tarnish and restore shine, use a soft silver polishing cloth. For heavier tarnish, use a gentle foam silver-cleaner or polish. Carefully follow the instructions on the cleaner's packaging for best results.

If your sterling jewelry has a hand-applied, oxidized finish, remember that tarnish-removing cleaners may remove some of the intended finish. Instead, use a soft polishing cloth very lightly on these designs, polishing only the areas that you would like to be brightest.

Gold Filled Jewelry

Gold filled jewelry should be cared for just as you would care for solid gold jewelry. Use a gentle, liquid jewelry cleaner to restore shine and remove dirt and oils. Follow the instructions on the cleaner's packaging, but use a babies' extra-fine toothbrush to gently scrub your jewelry, instead of the stiffer brush that may be included. (Do not use the same toothbrush for brushing teeth; it should be reserved just for jewelry cleaning.) Use a clean, lint-free cotton cloth or paper towel to gently pat the jewelry completely dry after cleaning.

Copper Jewelry

Copper is highly prone to tarnishing, which gives it a darker brown, antiqued look. To avoid tarnish, store your copper jewelry the same way you should store sterling silver jewelry (above). Use a polishing cloth for light touch-ups. For heavier tarnish, try soaking the jewelry for several minutes in lemon juice, or use a gentle cleanser intended for copper.

Avoiding Physical Stress

Please be careful with your handmade jewelry. Metal links that are bent or pulled will weaken and break over time. Never wear your jewelry when you go swimming, and avoid wearing it in the shower. Make sure your jewelry fits comfortably, with enough room to close clasps without having to tug. If you have questions about fit, or if your jewelry accidentally becomes damaged, feel free to contact us for help.
